Author Jacqueline Davies practically had a Lemonade War on her hands one spring day in 2005. The day was unusually hot—the first really hot day of the season. Her middle son Henry had a friend over, and they were setting up a lemonade stand in the driveway. Her older son Sam also had a friend over, and they wanted to set up their own lemonade stand—in the same spot.

“I stood there in the front door,” recalls the author, “watching the whole thing unfold. The boys were arguing about who had ‘driveway rights,’ and I could just imagine Sam and his friend setting up their own stand right across the street. That’s when the phrase ‘Lemonade War’ first popped into my head.”

Jacqueline Davies has been writing stories for children for over a decade. Her first book, Where the Ground Meets the Sky, was published in 2002. Four more books quickly followed: The Boy Who Drew Birds: A Story of John James Audubon (2004), The Night Is Singing (2006), The House Takes a Vacation (2007), and now The Lemonade War (2007).

In addition to her two sons, Ms. Davies has a daughter named Mae, a husband named John, and a dog named Harley. They all live together in Needham, Massachusetts, a town that used to have an ice cream store called The Big Dipper and that still has a town green where everyone congregates on hot days.

Ms. Davies was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1962. To figure out her age, just subtract 1962 from the current year (example: 2007 – 1962 = 45. Wow! That’s old!) Jessie can do that math in her head, but Evan’s smart enough to know that you shouldn’t tell an adult that they’re really old.

If Jessie were here, she’d ask Ms. Davies, “How much money do you make writing books?” Ms. Davies would answer, “More than you make selling lemonade, but not by much.”

If Evan were here, he’d ask Ms. Davies, “Do you have an iPod?” Ms. Davies would answer, “Yep, but it took me a long time to save up for it.”
